Video: Middle East Politics and History with Dr. Steve Carol

Posted: January 28, 2015 at 9:20 am   /   by

While some scholars may define it differently, Dr. Steve Carol refers to the Middle East as extending from (see map below):

  • Morocco and Mauritania on the west to Iran and Oman on the east, and from
  • Cyprus and Turkey in the north to Yemen, Sudan, Djbouoti, Somalia, and the Comoros in the south.

This territory includes the countries we usually think of first when we hear “Middle East”, among them Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia.

From the daily news pouring out of the region, we all recognize the names of these countries. But most of us could only identify no more than a few of them on a map, let alone talk about their storied histories. Yet, in barely 2 hours, Dr. Carol covers the political history of the entire region in the enlightening 2-part video presentation that appears below.

This is no stale history lecture. Dr. Carol speaks with passion, and puts heavy emphasis on today’s politics, including his views of the Obama administration’s policies in the Middle East.

So …

If you’re tired of 30-second sound bites from the mainstream media about the Middle East, get some coffee, sit up straight, pay attention, and invest 2 hours with these videos to learn about the rich historical context for today’s turmoil in the region.

Note: Twenty-or-so countries are a lot to keep track of. As Dr. Carol speaks, keep an eye on the map supplied below, or find another of your own. For example, you could enter “map middle east north africa” in Google. And to learn still more from Dr. Carol’s frequent updates on the Middle East, see the notes at the bottom of this page. Since the date of this lecture (Jan 17) the Middle East is already changing, yet again, with the death of King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia.
