SOTU FACT: Spending Cuts & Reforms Needed to Replace Obama Sequester — Not More Tax Hikes

CLAIM: Everyone agrees we need to replace the Obama sequester, but what “some in this Congress” proposed is bad.

  • “Democrats, Republicans, business leaders, and economists have already said that these cuts, known here in Washington as ‘the sequester,’ are a really bad idea…” (President Obama, State of the Union Address, February 12, 2013)

FACT: The House has passed two bills to replace the president’s sequester with common-sense spending cuts and reforms that curb waste, fraud, and abuse, and strengthen important entitlement programs for the future.

  • On, the Budget Committee explains how the House-passed bills eliminate a “too big to fail” bailout fund in the 2010 Dodd-Frank law, an unaccountable ObamaCare slush fund, and more.
  • The GOP bills consolidate 47 overlapping government programs across nine agencies and restrain the growth and spending by government bureaucracies.
  • The House-passed bills save billions by clamping down on millionaires receiving food stamps, ending over-payment of taxpayer-funded benefits, and more.
  • Learn more about both House-passed bills to replace the president’s sequester here.
  • The sequester was the Obama administration’s idea, but neither Senate Democrats nor the president have offered a replacement plan of their own.

BOEHNER QUOTE: “President Obama first proposed the sequester and insisted it become law.  Republicans have twice voted to replace these arbitrary cuts with common-sense cuts and reforms that protect our national defense.  We believe there is a better way to reduce the deficit, but Americans do not support sacrificing real spending cuts for more tax hikes.” (Speaker Boehner Statement on the President’s Sequester, 2/5/13)
