Biden does Benghazi

Attention on Biden’s Smirkfest overlooks the real legacy of the VP Debate.

The Vice President’s shocking lack of decorum and ill-manners at the debate are dominating most of the discussion at the moment, which is sadly overshadowing a serious examination of the substance of the event.

Last week, I, along with many others noted the remarkable string of falsehoods Obama spun during the first debate, and while Biden certainly followed his boss’s lead in this regard, his string of statements on Benghazi early in the debate deserves special attention.  As my friends and family can tell you, I have been spitting-mad over Benghazi, and particularly the left-wing media’s reluctance to cover it.  It is absolutely clear that the administration has blatantly lied and covered-up Benghazi from the beginning with a false story line that only this week was fully “retracted” by the White House.  Testimony under oath before congress made clear the White House was given intelligence almost immediately indicating Benghazi was a terrorist operation.  Even more damning was evidence of repeated requests for more security, requests that were denied by the State Department.  Also in evidence were a string of attacks against the diplomatic mission in Libya, along with an active al Qaeda presence in the country.

Despite the evidence available in the public domain, there was Biden last night, vehemently denying there was any intelligence indicating a terror attack, and repeating with equal certainty that the administration had not received any requests for additional security.  What can one possibly make of this?  If he’s simply lying, it is such a brazen, obvious lie as to border on the imbecilic.  Everyone knows there is documentary evidence and first-hand testimony confirming intelligence of a terror attack, and many rebuffed requests for more security.  It is literally akin to insisting black is white, that day is night, it is a lie so obvious as to be absurd.  The only other possible explanation is ignorance of a truly shocking degree in a man next in line to the presidency, particularly since he was added to the ticket in 2008 because of his foreign policy “expertise.”  Biden is no intellectual giant, but either possibility is shocking, even for him.

Whether through ignorance or brazenness, Biden was not finished.  He went on to blame the Republicans in general, and Ryan by direct implication for the stripped-down security in Benghazi, insisting they had cut the budget for embassy security.  This is an incredibly absurd and false accusation, as there has been no budget approved in more than three years!  In other words, there has been no budget process that the Republicans have been a part of that has had any bearing upon State Department security programs since Obama came into office.  Furthermore, actual funding for security has gone up dramatically over the past ten years.  In addition, the State Department has wide latitude when it comes to its security budget.  Nobody is going to go short on security  when there is reason to doubt the safety of our people overseas.  Well, nobody until the Obama administration, which apparently did exactly that.

I will have more in another post on Biden’s string of Whoppers from the debate, but I think Benghazi deserves special scrutiny.  This is not a question of partisan posturing, or a disagreement on policy or issues.  There has been a serious failure of administrative process and oversight which caused the death of four Americans.  The victims, their families, and the American People deserve answers, and those responsible must be brought to account.
