Fast and Furious: Bring on a Lawsuit
Eric Holder is back in the news as the House has filed a lawsuit against the attorney general in relation to the documents he has refused to turn over concerning the Fast and Furious scandal.
“Operation Fast and Furious” was designed to target high-level cartel members and help stop gun trafficking from the United States into Mexico. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) carried out the operation. The operation used the controversial tactic of “gun-walking,” allowing the marked weapons to be taken by the suspected criminals. In all, over 2,000 weapons were allowed to walk and so far less than half of them have been accounted for.
The operation came to the attention of the public on December 14, 2010, when U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was killed in a firefight with suspected illegal immigrants near the Arizona/Mexico border. It was discovered that a number of the guns used by the suspected illegal immigrants were part of “Operation Fast and Furious.”
In February of 2011, the Department of Justice (DOJ) denied that the “gun-walking” tactic had been approved, only to withdraw that claim some 10 months later. When the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee requested all the documents pertaining to the case be turned over to them from the DOJ, Holder refused and President Obama declared the records to be “executive privilege.”
That act led to Holder being held in civil and criminal contempt of Congress. The lawsuit that has been filed is asking that the president’s “executive privilege” be declared invalid, for the rejection of Holder’s objection to the subpoena, and that all records of the operation be turned over to the House.
Basically, the suit is asking that the DOJ’s cover-up of the ATF’s cover-up be declared invalid and that the records finally be given to those investigating the incident. It is interesting that the Obama administration seems to feel like the whole incident, including the death of Agent Terry, be swept under the rug and forgotten, which is ludicrous.
Not only did the administration approve a misguided “gun-walking” operation, they attempted to deny the whole thing. All the while, they made our borders MORE dangerous by allowing many of the weapons to make it to Mexico, only to be heard of again under tragic circumstances.
How is it that we can trust the government with the protection of our borders, homes and families, when they are standing by and watching illegal firearms leave the country?
It is time that competent individuals take over in Washington. It is time that we get rid of the administration that uses its “executive privilege” like a get our of jail free card. It is time that we put into the oval office a man that won’t refuse to honor a man that gave his life securing the United States Border.
